Filmmaker Te-Sheng Wei’s feature debut as a director, CAPE NO. 7 (Audience Award, Golden Horse FF and Taipei FF) is currently the highest-grossing film in Taiwan’s cinematic history. Inspired by a true story of a postman successfully delivering a 60 year-old letter, Wei wrote the script with financing from the Taiwanese government and from his own refinanced home.
Aga (Fan Van, a singer and first time actor) is a native of Hengchun who returns to the small seaport village after a failed attempt at becoming a successful singer/musician in Taipei. Given a temporary position as town postman, Aga begins to open and read a collection of undeliverable mail addressed to Cape No. 7 of Hengchun County. Soon after, Aga and an assorted group of Hengchun locals are scouted by representatives of the town council to perform as the opening band for the Japanese pop singer Kousuke Atari. As the newly-formed band prepares for its grand debut, Aga must learn to work with fellow band members, and to open up to his band’s manager, Tomoko. CAPE NO. 7 is a refreshing entry into Taiwan’s cinematic landscape, successfully incorporating the local sensibilities of a small Taiwanese village, blended with the music of new and old Taiwan. The film also marks Taiwan's official submission into the Academy Awards' Best Foreign Language Film competition and Te-Sheng Wei is definitely a filmmaker to keep an eye on in future. I was confused at times at what was going on. The meaning of breaking the guitar at the start was not explained well and so some of the character's motivations afterward were not clear.
