San Diego Asian Film Festival 2009

SCANDAL MAKERS is a blockbuster Korean film (also known as Speed Scandal) made for breaking box office records and pleasing the masses in its ridiculous and conventional comedy. The biggest surprise is that SCANDAL MAKERS is actually successful on both commercial and critical levels. It works so well, in fact, it’s already slated for a Hollywood remake (meaning, better catch it at a film festival fast!).

Cha Tae-Hyun (of My Sassy Girl fame) stars as Hyun-Su, a TV actor turned radio personality, counseling people’s problems over the airwaves on a popular call-in show. Hyun-Su suddenly discovers a few problems of his own when a young woman shows up at his doorstep of his luxury bachelor pad claiming to be his illegitimate long-lost daughter. Worse yet, she has a 6-year old son of her own, making 36-year old Hyun-Su into a grandfather!

A scandal such as this could never go well for Hyun-Su’s career, but in the hands of first-time director Kang Hyung-chul, it couldn’t get more fun for audiences. The self-obsessed radio personality is forced to reassess what is truly important in life as he has to suddenly deal with caring for a family. Tae-Hyun’s impeccable comic timing as the older-than-he-looks radio celebrity whose life turns upside down, along with the most adorable little boy ever played by newcomer Wang Seok-Hyun, make this unbelievable setup irresistibly charming. SCANDAL MAKERS is pure delight and a crowd-pleasing hit – just as it was intended.
